Arunachal: Mikir Community Inaugurates First Cremation Ground in Papum Pare District

Northeast Desk, 29th February: In a momentous occasion for the Mikir community residing in Papum Pare district, MLA Tana Hali Tara unveiled the community’s inaugural cremation ground in Kokila, Balijan Circle, on February 29. The ceremony, graced by the presence of Papum Pare Deputy Commissioner Jiken Bomjen, marks a significant milestone for the historically marginalized community.

As an invaluable election gift, the newly established cremation ground stands as a vital facility for the Mikir community, providing them with a dedicated space for performing the final rites of their departed loved ones. Emphasizing inclusivity, the inauguration ceremony underscored the commitment of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to the welfare of all communities, as expressed by MLA Tana Hali Tara.

Representing the Doimukh assembly constituency, MLA Tana Hali Tara reiterated the BJP’s core principle of “Sabka Saath aur Sabka Vikas,” emphasizing the imperative of ensuring development reaches every stratum of society. He pledged steadfast dedication to the progress of his constituency, prioritizing service to the people over personal ambitions for ministerial positions.

Recognizing the profound historical significance of the Mikir community, MLA Hali Tara affirmed their indigenous status within Arunachal Pradesh. The Mikirs, entrenched in border towns for generations, embody an integral aspect of the region’s rich heritage and cultural tapestry.

Acknowledging the Mikir community’s enduring partnership with the Nyishi and their longstanding support in the Doimukh area, MLA Hali Tara appealed for empathy and understanding towards the community’s plight. He addressed their plea for the restoration of lost Arunachal Pradesh Scheduled Tribe (APST) and Permanent Residential Certificate (PRC) status.

The Mikirs, predominantly residing in Chessa, Kokila, Hollongi, Balijan, and Tarasso, were initially accorded APST status under the Scheduled Tribe Amendment Act of 1950. However, their current status remains uncertain, prompting the community to advocate for the reinstatement of their rightful recognition.

The inauguration of the cremation ground, alongside the foundational laying of the road from the airport to Hollongi, signifies not only infrastructural progress but also signifies a pivotal stride towards addressing the historical and cultural needs of the Mikir community in Papum Pare district.
