Arunachal: Military Garrison Named after General Bipin Rawat

Guwahati: The Kibithu military garrison in the Anjaw district of Arunachal Pradesh was renamed as “General Bipin Rawat Military Garrison” on Saturday in honour of the late General Bipin Rawat, the nation’s first Chief of Defence Staff (CDS).

The state’s chief minister, Pema Khandu, also dedicated the 22 km of road between Walong and Kibithu as “Gen Bipin Rawat Marg.”

The state governor Brig. (Retd) B.D. Mishra opened a great gate constructed in the region’s traditional architectural style.

In addition to this, Rs 10 crores was allocated to make Gen Rawat Garrison one of the greatest in the country in honour of General Rawat’s remarkable efforts and the military’s contributions to guarding Arunachal Pradesh’s borders.

Meantime, a life-size mural of Gen. Bipin Rawat was unveiled at Kibithu by Ms. Tarini, the general’s daughter who was also present at the event.

A solemn dedication ceremony was performed at Kibithu on September 10, 2022, to honour the late General Bipin Rawat’s selfless contribution to a grateful people. According to an official statement, senior military and civilian dignitaries as well as the daughters of General Bipin Rawat attended the event. They were joined by the honourable governor and chief minister of Arunachal Pradesh, the general officer commanding-in-chief of Eastern Command, and other dignitaries.

It should be noted that Gen. Rawat, his wife Madhulika Rawat, and 12 other military members perished in a helicopter crash in December of last year.

In Kibithu, a small hamlet on the banks of the Lohit Valley, Gen Rawat served as the Colonel in charge of his Battalion 5/11 Gorkha Rifles from 1999 to 2000. During this time, he made a significant contribution to bolstering the security infrastructure of Kibithu.
