Arunachal: Naharlagun Police Achieve Major Success with ‘Operation Dawn’ in 2024
Itanagar: The Naharlagun Police, located near Arunachal Pradesh’s capital Itanagar, achieved a significant milestone in its fight against narcotics and crime in 2024.
Under the banner of ‘Operation Dawn,’ the police seized over 500 grams of heroin, seven kilograms of cannabis, and other narcotic substances, arresting 91 individuals in the process, according to a statement issued on January 4 by Superintendent of Police (SP) Mihin Gambo.
“Police seized 588.42 grams of heroin, 7,042.5 grams of cannabis, 48 grams of Lorazepam, and 233.81 grams of Morphine from various peddlers. A total of 41 NDPS (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances) cases were registered during the year, resulting in the arrest of 91 drug peddlers,” SP Gambo said.
He noted that the initiative marked a significant improvement over the previous year, with an increased number of cases detected and stricter enforcement measures. “These actions have not only led to the confiscation of larger quantities of illegal substances but have also demonstrated the efficacy of the initiative,” Gambo added.
The crackdown has had a transformative impact on the region’s crime landscape, significantly reducing thefts and burglaries often linked to drug addiction. The district recorded 152 cases of theft and burglary last year, a decline attributed to the targeted actions under Operation Dawn.
In addition to enforcement, the police organized extensive awareness campaigns across schools, colleges, and rehabilitation centers to educate young people about the dangers of drug abuse. The campaigns inspired many individuals struggling with addiction to seek help and enroll in de-addiction programs at rehabilitation facilities, according to Gambo.
“Operation Dawn has not only curbed the supply of illegal drugs but has also prevented countless young people from falling into addiction,” Gambo said. “The combined efforts of the police and the community have been instrumental in creating a safer and more secure environment.”
The SP expressed his gratitude to the residents of Naharlagun for their unwavering support and cooperation, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in combating drug abuse. He urged continued collaboration as the police prepare to launch Operation Dawn 2.0 in 2025.
The upcoming phase aims to build on the achievements of the past year, targeting greater successes in the ongoing fight against narcotics and related crimes, Gambo concluded.
