Itanagar: The National Sports Day celebrations began in vibrant style at the Gyalwa Tsangyang Gyatso High Altitude Sports Stadium in Tawang on August 29, with a three-day sporting festival organised by the Department of Sports in collaboration with the Tawang District Archery Association and the Tawang Cycling Association.
The event was inaugurated by Deputy Commissioner Tawang, Namgyal Angmo, in the presence of Superintendent of Police Dr. D.W. Thongon, Deputy Commander Tawang Brigade Colonel M. Upadhyay, members of Monpa Mimang Tsogpa, district sports officials, and a large gathering of sports enthusiasts.
In her address, DC Angmo praised local sports organisations for their efforts in honing young talent, emphasising the value of sports in discipline, teamwork, and resilience. She particularly lauded budding archers for preserving the traditional sport while excelling at competitive levels. District Sports Officer Sange Tsering highlighted the significance of the day in honour of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand and announced upcoming cycling rallies and competitions lined up until August 31.
The opening ceremony included floral tributes to Dhyan Chand and the ceremonial lamp lighting, followed by the felicitation of young archers with tracksuits before the archery tournaments began. The results saw Tsering Wangchu, Tsering Dorjee, and Sonam emerge winners in the sub-junior, junior, and senior categories respectively.
The day closed on a high with an electrifying football match between DC-XI and the Tawang District Archery Association team, led by MLA Namgey Tsering. In a dramatic penalty shootout, the TDAA team triumphed 7–6.
The celebrations, blending tradition with modern sporting spirit, will continue over the weekend, bringing together athletes and the community in a collective tribute to fitness and India’s sporting legacy.
