Arunachal Police Crack Down on Interstate Drug Racket in Major Heroin Bust
Itanagar: In a significant breakthrough against drug trafficking, Naharlagun police in Arunachal Pradesh’s Itanagar Capital Region (ICR) seized a substantial cache of heroin and apprehended five interstate drug peddlers after a four-day-long operation under the banner of ‘Operation Dawn.’
Acting on intelligence reports received on November 12, authorities intercepted a white Toyota Urban Cruiser vehicle at Karsingsa block point. A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of 5.71 grams of heroin concealed in the central storage compartment. Two suspects, Nabam Toni (27) and Tana Tamin (30), were immediately taken into custody. Their interrogation revealed the involvement of an accomplice, Badong Ratan (31), who was subsequently arrested.
The operation expanded its scope on November 15, with Naharlagun police, assisted by Assam Police, apprehending Dharmendra Das (30), a resident of Assam’s Lakhimpur district. A body search revealed 12 vials of heroin weighing 13.44 grams. Further investigation led to the arrest of another suspect, Rajen Boruah (41), with 3.42 grams of heroin recovered from his possession.
The operation, led by SDPO Naharlagun Rishi Longdo and supervised by SP Naharlagun Mihin Gambo, was conducted meticulously, ensuring strict compliance with the NDPS Act. The suspects were presented before the Hon’ble Special Judge (NDPS) in Yupia and remain in police custody as investigations continue to trace the wider drug supply network.
Commending the police force, Arunachal Chief Minister Pema Khandu lauded the operation through his official X handle, stating, “This operation sends a strong message: we will leave no stone unturned in striking at the roots of the drug menace. I appeal to our youth to say NO to drugs. They destroy lives, futures, and dreams.”
The success of ‘Operation Dawn’ underscores the commitment of Arunachal Pradesh authorities to combat the drug epidemic and safeguard the future of its youth.
