Arunachal Pradesh Among Top States for Forest Cover: ISFR 2023 Report

Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh has been ranked among the top three states in India with the largest forest and tree cover, according to the India State of Forest Report (ISFR) 2023.

The state is preceded by Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra in terms of total forest area. With a forest cover spanning 65,882 sq km, Arunachal accounts for over 75% of its geographical area under forests, making it the second state with the largest forest cover after Madhya Pradesh, which has 77,073 sq km.

Taking to his microblogging platform X, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister lauded the efforts of the Forest Department and other stakeholders for their dedication to preserving and expanding forest and tree cover. “I sincerely compliment all stakeholders, including Team Forest Department, for their concerted efforts in preserving and expanding forests and tree cover, which is so crucial to maintaining ecological balance and supporting life on Earth,” he wrote.

The Chief Minister highlighted the vital role of forests as natural air purifiers, which absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, contributing significantly to combating climate change. He urged the people of Arunachal Pradesh to continue working toward a “healthy environment and sustainable development for future generations.”

He also underscored the numerous benefits derived from protecting natural resources, emphasizing how forests prevent soil erosion, regulate water cycles, and support biodiversity by providing habitats for countless species. Additionally, forests yield valuable resources such as wood, fruits, medicinal plants, and recreational opportunities.

This recognition reinforces Arunachal Pradesh’s commitment to environmental conservation and its role as a green frontier in India.
