Arunachal Pradesh Gears Up for Electoral Roll Overhaul Ahead of Key Local Polls

Itanagar: The Arunachal Pradesh State Election Commission (SEC) has officially announced a comprehensive summary revision of electoral rolls, setting the stage for crucial elections in the coming year.

The announcement, made on Monday, details a meticulous process aimed at ensuring accuracy and inclusivity in the voter lists for both Panchayati Raj institutions and municipal bodies. The key qualifying date for inclusion in the updated rolls has been set as January 1, 2025.

The draft electoral rolls are slated for public release on April 17, marking the beginning of a period for public scrutiny. Citizens will have the opportunity to file claims and objections regarding the draft rolls from April 17 to May 8. To further enhance transparency, gram sabhas and local bodies will conduct readings of relevant sections of the rolls between April 19 and 21, allowing for on-the-spot verification.

A special campaign, designed to facilitate the smooth submission of claims and objections, will be held on April 24 and 25. This initiative will involve booth-level agents from various political parties, aiming to assist citizens in navigating the process. The SEC has allocated the period from May 8 to 29 for the thorough processing of all claims and objections received. Following this, the supplementary list will be prepared and printed by June 10, culminating in the final publication of the electoral rolls on June 16.

The SEC has issued stringent directives to Electoral Registration Officers and Assistant Electoral Registration Officers, emphasizing the importance of adhering strictly to the Arunachal Pradesh Panchayati Raj Act, 1997, and the 2002 rules governing electoral roll preparation. This meticulous approach underscores the commission’s commitment to conducting a fair and transparent revision process. The elections for the two-tier panchayat system and the municipal bodies of Itanagar and Pasighat, East Siang district, are scheduled to take place in November-December 2025.
