Arunachal Pradesh Gurukul Gains Global Recognition for Blending Indigenous Knowledge with Modern Education
Arunachal: The Nyubu Nyugam Yerko Gurukul in Rang Village, Arunachal Pradesh, is making waves with its distinctive approach to education, which seamlessly integrates indigenous Nyishi language and cultural practices with a contemporary curriculum.
Offering free education, this institution stands out by fostering cultural preservation alongside academic development—a model that has drawn praise from both local leaders and international dignitaries.
Chief Minister Pema Khandu underscored the gurukul’s importance in maintaining cultural continuity, noting that its curriculum, unlike traditional schools, embeds Nyishi traditions into a modern academic framework.
Students engage in learning that spans both Vedic traditions, passed down orally through generations, and core academic subjects, allowing them to remain rooted in their heritage while equipping them for today’s world.
Erik Solheim, former UN Environment Executive Director, lauded the gurukul’s educational model as a “bridge between ancient wisdom and modern needs,” commending traditional communities for setting up centres that adapt indigenous knowledge for future generations. This unique approach is positioning the Nyubu Nyugam Yerko Gurukul as a beacon of cultural preservation and educational innovation in Northeast India.
