Arunachal Pradesh Launches Major HIV/AIDS Awareness Campaign

Northeast Desk, August 17, 2024 — In a decisive effort to address the rising HIV cases in Arunachal Pradesh, Health Minister Biyuram Wahge has inaugurated a comprehensive two-month HIV/AIDS awareness campaign. The initiative, in collaboration with the Arunachal Pradesh AIDS Control Society, aims to enhance public knowledge on HIV prevention, testing, and treatment throughout the state.

The launch event in Itanagar featured a high-profile bike rally, organized by the Arunachal Superbike Club and supported by over twenty other bike clubs, including the Bullet Club. The rally, starting from Akashdeep and concluding in Lekhi, was designed to engage the youth and amplify the campaign’s message of safe practices while combating stigma associated with HIV/AIDS.

Health Minister Wahge underscored the importance of community involvement, stating, “Awareness, testing, and treatment are our key weapons in securing a healthy future.” The campaign seeks to mobilize public participation to confront and overcome the challenges posed by HIV/AIDS.

Hinakum Mein, a member of the People Living with HIV (PLH) group, shared his personal journey, emphasizing the social stigma and discrimination faced since his diagnosis. “Despite the difficulties, including discrimination from friends and relatives, I remain determined to stay strong and advocate for greater empathy towards those affected,” Mein remarked.

Dr. Majum Basar, Project Director of the Arunachal Pradesh State AIDS Control Society, elaborated on the campaign’s goals. “Our focus is not only on raising awareness but also on fostering meaningful behavioral changes,” Dr. Basar said. The campaign, initially launched nationwide on International Youth Day, August 12, will target two districts—Papum Pare and East Siang—over the next two months. With 2,158 HIV cases reported in the state, the campaign aims to educate communities and prevent the progression of these cases into AIDS.

Dr. Gobi Basar of the Arunachal Superbike Club highlighted the rally’s role in engaging the youth. “This rally is our first involvement in such an initiative, and we’re proud to use our platform to spread a crucial social message. The link between HIV and drug use is a pressing issue that demands our attention,” Dr. Basar stated.

As the campaign progresses, the collective efforts of the government, local organizations, and the community aim to foster a more informed and supportive environment in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
