Arunachal Pradesh Looks to Sky to Boost Healthcare, Minister Explores Drone Tech

NEW DELHI—Arunachal Pradesh is leveraging technology to overcome geographical barriers in healthcare delivery, with the state’s Health & Family Welfare Minister, Biyuram Wahge, recently visiting the 6th International Drone Expo 2025 in Delhi. Accompanied by a delegation of senior health department officials, Minister Wahge’s visit underscored the state’s proactive approach to integrating drone technology into its public health infrastructure, particularly for its far-flung and hilly regions.

The delegation engaged with several exhibitors, exploring the practical applications of drone-based solutions for transporting critical medical supplies like medicines, vaccines, and diagnostic samples. The Minister emphasised the life-saving potential of these unmanned aerial vehicles, highlighting their capacity to ensure timely medical interventions in emergency scenarios where traditional transport is often slow or impossible. “Drone technology has immense potential to bridge the healthcare accessibility gap in Arunachal’s difficult terrains. It’s inspiring to see how innovation is transforming service delivery,” Wahge stated during his visit.

Arunachal Pradesh is already a pioneer in this field. As part of the ‘Medicine from the Sky’ initiative, the state conducted its first pilot on August 15, 2022, in collaboration with the World Economic Forum, to mark the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav. A drone successfully airlifted essential medicines from Seppa to Chayang Tajo in the East Kameng District, showcasing the feasibility of such a system. The state currently works with two leading drone service providers, Tech Eagle and Redwing, to support medical logistics in its hard-to-reach areas. With continued investments and strategic partnerships, Arunachal Pradesh aims to become a national model for using drone-based healthcare logistics to serve communities in similarly challenging terrains across India.
