Arunachal Pradesh Releases Detailed Biodiversity Map Highlighting Ecological Heritage

Northeast Desk, 27th August: The Department of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change of Arunachal Pradesh has unveiled a comprehensive biodiversity map of the state, showcasing its rich ecological heritage. This vibrant and informative map emphasizes the diverse flora, fauna, and cultural elements that distinguish Arunachal Pradesh as a unique biodiversity hotspot.

Chief Minister Pema Khandu lauded the initiative on Twitter, describing the map as “a powerful tool that highlights the State’s diverse and rich biodiversity.” He stressed its importance in guiding environmental protection and sustainable development efforts.

The map, crafted by artist Sudarshan Shaw, vividly portrays the state’s varied landscapes, from dense forests to majestic mountain ranges. It features iconic species such as the Bengal tiger, snow leopard, and numerous endemic birds and plants. Key biodiversity zones and protected areas are clearly marked, offering a visual guide to the state’s conservation priorities.

Shaw shared his experience of creating the map on Instagram, reflecting on the challenge of representing such extensive diversity. “To tell the tale of a land that is a heaven to all wildlife and nature lovers in a local visual language came as a massive responsibility,” he noted.

In addition to its ecological focus, the map incorporates cultural elements, showcasing the 26 major indigenous communities of Arunachal Pradesh. This inclusion underscores the deep connection between the state’s biodiversity and its human populations.

With 85% of its area under forest cover, Arunachal Pradesh stands as “an inspiring example for the entire nation and the world,” according to Shaw. The map is intended to serve both as an educational tool and a celebration of the state’s natural wealth, aiming to foster greater awareness and conservation efforts.
