Arunachal Pradesh to Launch 12,500 MW Hydropower Projects by 2027

Northeast Desk, 11th September: Arunachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein has announced that hydropower projects with a combined installed capacity of 12,500 megawatts (MW) will commence operations within the next two years. The announcement was made on September 11, during the Solung festival celebrations at Roing in Lower Dibang Valley district.

Mein revealed that the projects will be developed by central public sector undertakings (CPSUs) including NHPC, NEEPCO, THDC, and SJVN. He stated that five projects are scheduled to begin next year, with three additional projects starting in both 2026 and 2027. These initiatives aim to meet the power needs of both the state and the nation while driving rapid economic development in Arunachal Pradesh.

The Deputy Chief Minister emphasized that the large dams associated with these projects will provide multiple benefits, including power generation, water regulation for downstream areas, irrigation, and fisheries. He noted that these projects are expected to boost tourism and create job opportunities in the state.

Mein also highlighted the financial benefits of the projects, stating that the state is projected to earn Rs 1,836 crore annually from equity shares. This revenue is anticipated to support future generations in Arunachal Pradesh.

Additionally, the government is committed to developing small hydro projects in border villages, which will aid remote communities, defence personnel, and military setups in isolated areas. Mein also mentioned ongoing efforts to enhance economic activities, including advancements in tourism through the construction of the 218-kilometre Assam-Arunachal railway line, which will pass through the revered pilgrimage site of Parsuram Kund.
