Arunachal Pradesh to Roll Out New Film Policy to Boost Local Cinema

Itanagar: In a significant move to nurture the state’s emerging film industry, the Arunachal Pradesh government has announced plans to introduce a comprehensive film policy. Information and Public Relations (IPR) Minister Nyato Dukam, speaking in the Assembly on Wednesday, confirmed that the cabinet has already approved an interim committee tasked with drafting the policy in consultation with key stakeholders.

Dukam stated that while the policy remains in its draft stage, it is under active review. The committee, consisting of the IPR secretary, director, deputy director (film), and two eminent filmmakers, is expected to finalize and submit the policy by the next financial year. The government is also seeking insights from the Film and Television Institute at Rakap and other industry experts to shape a robust framework that supports filmmakers and enhances the state’s film ecosystem.

BJP MLA Tai Nikio, who raised the issue during Question Hour, highlighted the pressing financial challenges faced by local filmmakers due to the absence of structured policies and government support. He urged the government to establish a State Film Production Board or Corporation, which would help streamline funding and create revenue-generating opportunities for local productions. According to Nikio, filmmakers often struggle to recover their investments, which discourages artistic expression and growth in the region’s cinema industry.

Reaffirming the government’s commitment, Dukam assured that the upcoming policy would incorporate industry recommendations and be designed to foster a sustainable and profitable film sector in Arunachal Pradesh. With this initiative, the state aims to not only provide financial backing and regulatory support but also position itself as a promising hub for regional cinema.
