Arunachal: Prohibitory Orders Issued in Namsai District After Clash Between Youths Sparks Tension

Northeast Desk, 14th January: In response to a clash between All Tai Khamti Singpho youths and Adivasi youths in Namsai, Arunachal Pradesh, the deputy commissioner cum district magistrate has invoked Section 144 of CrPC, imposing prohibitory orders. The incident, which began as a minor scuffle over inappropriate parking in the 2nd Mile area on January 13, escalated into a major clash, resulting in riots.

To maintain law and order, the gathering of more than four persons at a particular place from 2nd Mile, Namsai, to APIL Colony has been prohibited. Additionally, the carrying of lethal weapons such as guns, daos, bows, and arrows has been banned. The district commissioner emphasized that anyone found violating these orders will be prosecuted under the appropriate provisions of the law.

The tense situation led to at least 16 reported injuries in the clash, with individuals rushed to the hospital for treatment. Some Khamti youths, allegedly brandishing guns, were reported firing during the clash. The district commissioner has directed the Superintendent of Police, Namsai, to strictly enforce the imposed orders immediately.

A local resident, reflecting on the incident, stated, “It was a minor scuffle which later turned big. It was merely a personal matter that soon turned communal. Around 12 youths were injured, with 5 in serious condition after getting hit by bullets fired by the other group. Some youths were also attacked with lathis and daos. Now, who actually started the fight is yet unknown. Our Union youths were also involved, and we demand the immediate arrest of the culprit. We also ask for compensation for the property damaged in the incident.”
