Arunachal: Rare Takin Sightings in Tawang District Delight Local Community
Northeast Desk, 27th May: In a remarkable event highlighting Arunachal Pradesh’s rich biodiversity, a group of takins was recently spotted at Taksang Village in Zimithang under Tawang District, near the Indo-China border. Known locally as “kemya” in the Monpa language, these sightings mark the first time takins have been observed in Tawang, a region typically not known for these animals.
Takins, which are generally found in the Dibang Valley district, were first seen by the Army near T Gompa in Tripe Heights along the India-China border on May 24. The sighting was initially reported by the military personnel stationed in the area.
Adding to the excitement, earlier this month, a lone takin was also spotted near the sacred Chhamling Tso Lake. This solitary animal appeared to have been separated from its group and lost its way, sparking considerable interest and enthusiasm among the local community.
Arunachal Pradesh, with 80% of its land covered in forests, boasts a rich array of flora and fauna. The appearance of takins in Tawang district underscores the state’s vibrant biodiversity and the importance of its natural habitats.
Local residents and environmentalists alike are thrilled by these sightings, viewing them as a positive indicator of the region’s ecological health and the successful conservation efforts in place. The presence of takins, a species often associated with pristine and undisturbed habitats, is a testament to the ecological richness and significance of Arunachal Pradesh.
