Arunachal: Severe Flooding Cuts Off Kurung Kumey District

Northeast Desk, 1st July: The China border district of Kurung Kumey, including its administrative center Koloriang, has been entirely isolated from the rest of the country due to severe flooding. Local MLA Pani Taram of the 21st Koloriang constituency found himself stranded yesterday, June 30, amidst the chaotic aftermath of the floods.

The Kurung River overflowed overnight, leading to widespread devastation and disrupting connectivity to critical areas such as Porsiparlo, Damin, Pania Sang, Sarli, and Polosang within Arunachal Pradesh.

Emergency services and local authorities are currently coordinating efforts to assess the extent of the damage and provide relief to affected residents.

Meanwhile, continuous heavy rainfall over the past five days has pushed all rivers in Namsai district and Wakro circle of Lohit district beyond their danger levels. C J Mannou, an official from the Water Resources Division, issued a stark warning today, highlighting the severe flooding that has devastated communities across the region.

The overflow of Kamlang River into Barreng River and the surge of Tengapani River into Tiyang River have compounded the situation, posing significant threats to villages situated along their banks. Additionally, Jengthu and Noa-Dehing rivers are also flowing at dangerously high levels, intensifying concerns about potential bank erosion and further inundation.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and are actively engaged in rescue and relief operations to mitigate the impact of the ongoing flooding in these vulnerable regions.
