Arunachal: Tribute Paid to Gyamar Padang on First Anniversary of Passing

Northeast Desk, 5th May: On the solemn occasion of Gyamar Padang’s first death anniversary, thousands gathered at his residence in Naharlagun, Arunachal Pradesh on May 5 to pay homage to the whistle-blower who exposed the APPSC paper leakage scandal.

Gyamar Padang, revered for his courage and integrity, passed away on May 5th, 2023, after battling illness. His demise was mourned by the community, recognizing his pivotal role in confronting corruption.

Prominent figures including Techi Rana, an independent candidate representing PAJSC, Techi Puru, Chairman of the Pan Arunachal Joint Steering Committee, Gyamar Tana, General Secretary of the Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee, and Bamang Tago, Secretary-General of the Arunachal Olympics Association, joined the gathering to honor Padang’s memory. Social activists like Taw Paul, Sol Dodum, Nabam Tama, and Tai Chali, the singer, also paid their respects.

During the ceremony, a statue was unveiled at Gyamar Padang’s gravesite, and a two-minute silence was observed in his memory. Attendees voiced support for erecting a statue in his honor and advocated for a Whistle-blower Act in the state assembly.

Padang filed an FIR regarding the APPSC paper leak scam on August 28th, 2022, initiating a series of events leading to his untimely demise.

Techi Puru, Chairman of PAJSC, thanked the people of Arunachal Pradesh for their solidarity with Padang’s family and their commitment to addressing paper leakage issues. However, he criticized the government’s response as inadequate, particularly regarding pledges to address the committee’s demands. He dismissed assurances from the new APPSC Chairman, Prof. Pradip Lingfa, to implement robust Standard Operating Procedures for future examinations, emphasizing the need for genuine accountability and reform within the commission.
