Arunachal: Villagers Embrace Ethical Voting in Tirap District

Northeast Desk, 12th March: Chief Minister Pema Khandu’s recent calls to eradicate the money culture in elections have resonated deeply among the residents of Chasa and Noksa, located within the 57 Borduria Bogapani legislative assembly constituency in Tirap district, Arunachal Pradesh. Rejecting the practice of trading votes for monetary gain, villagers have instead chosen to support youth leader Jowang Hosai, the prominent BJP candidate in the constituency.

This shift away from the money culture, typically characterized by vote-buying, has seen villagers contributing firewood, vegetables, and other modest donations in support of Hosai’s candidacy. The sight of villagers, especially women, carrying firewood and produce from distant areas has been heartening.

Many villagers attribute the previous prevalence of the money culture during elections to the influence of the Congress party. However, under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi at the Centre and Chief Minister Khandu in the state, there has been a noticeable change in attitude. Residents are now steadfastly refusing monetary inducements in exchange for their votes.

Expressing their trust in Hosai’s commitment to serving the community, villagers have voiced their preference for him over other candidates, including incumbent MLA Wanglin Lowangdong, who recently switched allegiance from the Congress to the BJP. Hosai’s decade-long track record of active and diligent service to the people has earned him widespread support and admiration.
