Arunachal’s Tawang commemorates Major Bob Khating Day with great enthusiasm
Northeast Desk, 15th February: The 74th Major Bob Khathing Day was celebrated on February 14, 2024 with great enthusiasm in Tawang, a border town in Arunachal Pradesh.
The event brought together the Indian Armed Forces, Tawang Administration, and local residents at the Tawang War Memorial Complex.
Military officers from the Tawang Brigade, senior state officials, students, community leaders, Army Veterans, and Monks joined in the celebrations.
The festivities commenced with a traditional Wreath Laying ceremony, followed by the hoisting of the tricolour. Students and local artists showcased various performances, adding to the patriotic ambiance of the day.
The significance of February 14 dates back to 1951 when Major Bob Khathing raised the Indian tricolour for the first time in the remote Tawang region. Appointed as the Assistant Political Officer, Major Khating led a perilous expedition with 200 Assam Rifles troops and 600 porters, navigating through treacherous passes amidst harsh winter conditions.
Through his diplomatic skills and unwavering determination, Major Khating earned the trust of the local population, facilitating the establishment of Indian Civil Administration in Tawang.
His relentless efforts paved the way for Tawang’s integration into the Indian Union, laying the foundation for governance and development in the region.
Major Bob Khating’s visionary leadership and commitment to unity fostered a seamless transition, earning him widespread respect and admiration.
Today, Tawang stands as a testament to Major Bob Khating’s enduring legacy of peace, unity, and nation-building.
