Assam: 1 dead, 3 injured after Ambulance plunges into water after hitting bridge in Goalpara

Guwahati, 20th June: In a tragic incident on National Highway 17 near Kasadal in Assam’s Goalpara, an ambulance carrying patients plunged into the water after the bridge railing collapsed, resulting in the death of Manomati Basumatary and leaving three others seriously injured.

The accident occurred as the ambulance, which was transporting Basumatary along with three relatives and the driver, attempted to overtake another vehicle near the Kasadal Kali temple. The weakened bridge railing gave way, causing the vehicle to fall into the water below. The entire incident was captured on the temple’s CCTV camera.

The injured individuals, identified as Kikong Basumatary (50), Mohan Basumatary (26), Sajidul Islam (19) who was driving the ambulance, and Basanti Brahma Choudhury (45), were immediately rushed to the FRU at Dudhnai for treatment.

The ambulance was en route to Dhanubhanga, transporting Basanti Brahma Choudhury who had just been discharged from Goalpara Basanti Brahma Chaudhary Hospital. The accident spot was notably narrower than required due to ongoing four-lane road construction, contributing to the severity of the incident. Authorities are investigating the structural integrity of the bridge and the circumstances leading to the collapse.
