Assam: 1 Elephant Killed, 1injured after being hit by Train
Guwahati: An elephant was killed and another was injured after being hit by a freight carrying train in Kamrup district of Assam in the mid-night on Wednesday.
The incident took place on the Kamakhya-Jogighopa Railway Track at Gosaihat in Palasbari of the district.
According to reports, the accident occurred when a herd of elephants was trying to cross the railway tracks.
Officials from the Forest Department and Railways rushed to the spot after receiving the information.
The train was reportedly heading towards Delhi from Guwahati.
However, elephants had reportedly come down from Maliata hills in search of food.
It may be mentioned, the villagers stated that as the location was an active elephant corridor with elephants coming out of the wild on a regular basis, a signboard identifying the area as such be erected
They also recommended that trains going through the region be slowed down in order to avoid future accidents.
