Assam: 18 BJP leaders quit party, join Congress in Guwahati

Guwahati: Around eighteen leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Assam have quit the party and joined the Congress.

The BJP leaders were welcomed into the Congress in the presence of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) Chairman Bhupen Kumar Borah, MP Pradyut Bordoloi, and Congress Legislative Party leader Debabrata Saikia at the induction ceremony held at Rajiv Bhawan in Guwahati.

However, the new joiners include Achinta Saikia, Ujjal Hazarika, and Abdul Tarik.

According to Bhupen Borah, the leaders left the BJP party because “the people of the state are now dissatisfied with the work of the current BJP-led government.”

Borah further noted that in the recently concluded student body elections at various colleges and universities across the state, the candidates of the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), which is the Congress’s student wing, got the most seats.
