Assam: 34 civil servants arrested by SIT for APSC cash-for-job scam
Guwahati, 22nd November: In connection with the 2014 Assam Public Service Commission cash-for-job scam, a Special Investigation Team apprehended a total of 34 civil servants from various locations and transported them to Guwahati for interrogation.
The Assam government has initiated departmental proceedings against these officers, comprising Assam Civil Service, Assam Police Service, and other elite service officers selected by the APSC for the 2013 batch.
According to sources, two officers identified as Shahjahan Sarkar and Aishwarya Jeevan Baruah have been arrested.
This action follows a report submitted to the state government and a subsequent directive from Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, based on findings outlined in the CCE 2013 report. The report detailed abnormalities and malpractices during the examination’s execution.
The 34 officers implicated in the inquiry report of Justice (retd) Biplab Kumar Sharma Commission are currently under investigation in Guwahati.
Justice Sharma’s report also raised concerns about the appointment of the then-APSC chairman, Rakesh Paul. The Commission recommended that, in light of the widespread irregularities and malpractices in CCE 2013, the government should consider nullifying the selection of the entire CCE 2013 batch if deemed appropriate.
