Assam: 7-Month-Old Elephant Calf Dies Near Raimana National Park

Guwahati, 30th May: A heart-wrenching incident unfolded near Raimana National Park as a 7-month-old elephant calf, which had wandered out of the park several months ago, tragically passed away despite the concerted efforts of the forest department to save it.

The calf, which had been residing near the Charalpara picnic spot in Powali for approximately seven months, was discovered in a weakened state shortly before its demise.

Having ventured beyond the confines of the national park, the young elephant seemed to have lost its way, eventually settling in the Charalpara area.

Prompt action was taken by local residents, who promptly notified the forest department about the calf’s presence. The department had been closely monitoring its condition and striving to provide assistance ever since.

As the calf’s health began to deteriorate, efforts to rescue and rehabilitate it were intensified. Regrettably, despite the tireless endeavors of the forest department, the calf was unable to overcome its condition and succumbed to it.

While the exact cause of death remains undetermined, the forest department suspects that the extended period of displacement and inadequate nutrition may have significantly contributed to the unfortunate outcome.

The loss of this young elephant serves as a poignant reminder of the challenges faced by wildlife in navigating human-dominated landscapes, underscoring the importance of conservation efforts and responsible stewardship of natural habitats.
