Assam: 8756 former militants rehabilitated under Swavalamban scheme, says Himanta Biswa Sarma

Guwahati, 16th November: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that a total of 8,756 former militants have undergone rehabilitation under the Swavalamban scheme over the past two years. The initiative aims to reintegrate individuals who were previously engaged in militant activities back into mainstream society.

“Under the surrender-cum-rehabilitation policy and Swavalamban scheme, they received skill development training and are now leading a dignified life,” stated Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Breaking down the figures, the rehabilitation includes 4,203 cadres from NDFB (National Democratic Front of Bodoland), 1,926 from Karbi groups, 1,182 Adivasi members, 301 from NLFB (National Liberation Front of Bodoland), and others associated with various outfits. The individuals underwent skill development training as part of their rehabilitation process.

Launched in 2019, the Swavalamban scheme was conceived by the Assam government to offer a livelihood to former militants who chose to return to mainstream society. The program focuses on providing individuals with the skills necessary to lead a life of dignity and contribute positively to their communities.

This initiative reflects the state’s commitment to creating opportunities for reformed individuals and fostering a sense of belonging within the larger social fabric.
