Assam: ABSU Demands Provincialization of Bodo Medium Educational Institutions

Guwahati, 21st July: The All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU) President Dipen Boro has urged the Assam government to take immediate action regarding the provincialization of Bodo medium educational institutions. Addressing the media at The Bodofa House in Bagansali, Boro emphasized the pressing need for enhanced educational support for Bodo-medium institutions.

Highlighting Clause 6.3 of the Bodo Territorial Region (BTR) Agreement, Boro pointed out that the agreement mandates the provincialization of Bodo medium educational institutions. However, only 10 colleges have been provincialized in the four years since the agreement’s inception, neglecting crucial educational levels such as lower primary (LP), middle (ME), and higher secondary (HSS).

Boro expressed concern over the lack of creation of posts for Bodo medium Post Graduate Teachers (PGTs), noting that 2,271 Assamese medium PGT teachers were appointed in 2021, while Bodo medium posts remain unaddressed. He also highlighted the absence of Bodo medium posts at Sarupathar College and Janai Girls’ College, and the lack of new posts at the University of Bodoland.

In addition, Boro criticized the failure to establish new departments at Bineshwar Brahma Engineering College in Kokrajhar and the shortage of teachers in 26 Bodo medium primary schools and 206 institutions operating with a single teacher. He noted that Balipara, Dudhnai, and Baksa Model Colleges have not received the necessary Bodo medium posts.

Boro also pointed out the inadequate supply of textbooks for primary, middle, and high schools. He warned that if these issues are not promptly resolved, the ABSU would be compelled to launch a democratic movement to press for their demands.
