Assam Achieves Historic Milestone: State Becomes Direct Oil Producer
Guwahati – In a momentous announcement today, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma revealed that Oil India Limited (OIL) has struck hydrocarbons in the Namrup Borhat-1 well in Dibrugarh district. This significant discovery is particularly noteworthy as the Government of Assam holds a substantial stake in the well, marking a pioneering step for the state.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Chief Minister Sarma enthusiastically shared the news, stating, “@OilIndiaLimited has discovered hydrocarbon presence in Namrup Borhat-1 well, a well where Govt of Assam holds a significant stake.” He lauded the find as a monumental leap forward for both energy security and economic resilience, underscoring its profound implications for the nation.
The Chief Minister highlighted that this breakthrough not only validates the state’s investment in oil drilling but also makes Assam the first state government in India to become a direct oil producer. Sarma articulated the multifaceted benefits of this discovery, emphasising that it empowers Assam with enhanced revenue and royalty streams while simultaneously ensuring a consistent supply of energy for the country.
