Assam Achieves Record Paddy Procurement in KMS 2024–25; Red Rice from Majuli Enters Global Market
Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday announced a historic breakthrough in the state’s agricultural performance, declaring that Assam has achieved its highest-ever paddy procurement, reaching 6.97 lakh metric tonnes (MT) during the Kharif Marketing Season (KMS) 2024–25.
In a post on social media platform X, the Chief Minister wrote, “We are proud to announce the successful conclusion of KMS 2024–25 with a record paddy procurement of 6.97 lakh MT — the highest ever!” The figure represents more than double the 3.14 lakh MT procured during the 2023–24 season and a notable increase from the 5.92 lakh MT achieved in 2022–23, indicating a consistent upward trend in the government’s agricultural procurement initiatives.
Sarma attributed the milestone to the state’s concerted focus on improving market connectivity and ensuring farmers receive the Minimum Support Price (MSP). “This remarkable achievement reflects our commitment to ensuring that our farmers are connected to markets and the MSP they rightfully deserve,” he said.
The government had earlier set a procurement target of 5.85 lakh MT for the current KMS, which has been surpassed by over one lakh metric tonnes, highlighting robust procurement infrastructure and rising farmer engagement across Assam.
In a separate update, the Chief Minister shared another positive development, noting Assam’s increasing presence in the global agricultural export market. Farmers from Majuli — the world’s largest river island — have successfully exported 267 MT of red rice to markets in the Middle East and the European Union. The rice was cultivated over 1,000 hectares of farmland in Majuli, and the export is being viewed as a major boost for “Brand Assam,” providing better economic returns to farmers while showcasing the state’s nutrient-rich produce to global consumers.
These achievements signal Assam’s strengthening agricultural foundation and its expanding role in national food security and international trade.
