Assam: ACS Nandita Konwar dismissed in bribery case

Guwahati: Assam Government dismissed an Assam Civil Service officer (ACS) named Nandita Konwar after she was convicted in a case related to bribery.

According to reports, the ACS officer sought money for the release of payment over the Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS) in 2017, when she was working as the Project Director for the Kamrup metro’s Dist Rural Development Agency.

Konwar was reportedly caught red-handed while accepting a bribe in 2017. She was then taken before the Special Judge of Assam’s court. The court convicted Konwar in Special Case No. 22/2017 under section 7/13(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act 1988 after multiple sessions. Under PC Act section 7, Konwar was sentenced to three years of severe imprisonment and a fine of Rs 12,000 in default imprisonment of one month.

It may be mentioned that she was further sentenced 4 years imprisonment and a fine of Rs 20000 in default imprisonment of 2 months under PC Act 1988 section 13(2).

It needs to be mentioned that following the development, on Monday, the Personnel Department has issued an order which stated that Nandita Konwar being dismissed from her service. The decision came after the approval of state Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and after a thorough examination of the previous court order.
