Assam: AIUDF Chief Ajmal Concedes Defeat in Dhubri, Vows Comeback in 2026
Guwahati, 5th June: In a candid press conference held late at night, AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal acknowledged the “big blow” of losing his stronghold in Dhubri by over 10 lakh votes. The three-time MP expressed that it would take some time to thoroughly analyze the factors behind the party’s significant defeat.
Ajmal, who has represented Dhubri for three consecutive terms, was defeated by Rakibul Hussain, the Deputy Leader of the Congress Legislature Party in Assam and a former minister in Tarun Gogoi’s cabinet. Hussain secured a commanding victory with a margin of 10,12,476 votes, obtaining 14,71,885 votes against Ajmal’s 4,59,409 votes.
Despite this setback, Ajmal remains optimistic about the AIUDF’s future prospects. “It is a big blow. It will take some time to analyze what went wrong. We will find out what happened to the people because these same people made me MP for three consecutive terms,” he stated. Ajmal emphasized that the party will conduct a thorough investigation into the outcomes in Dhubri, as well as Nagaon and Karimganj seats, where the party also faced defeats.
Ajmal attributed the defeat to a “tsunami” against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, driven by discontent with the BJP government’s policies. “The tsunami came against possible Constitution change, 400-plus seats claim, attack on Babri mosque, forcible construction of Ram temple, and other issues. Apart from Muslims, Dalits and other marginalized communities voted against the BJP,” he explained.
In Nagaon, AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam finished third with 1,37,340 votes, while Sahabul Islam Choudhury managed only 29,205 votes in Karimganj. Despite the poor performance, Ajmal remains confident in the party’s ability to rebound. “We have the 2026 Assembly elections, and we will definitely win it. Congress almost vanished after Modi came in 2014, but today the opposition party made a comeback across the country. Around the world, people lose and then they make a comeback,” he asserted.
Ajmal concluded by reiterating the AIUDF’s commitment to addressing its shortcomings and preparing for a stronger performance in future elections.
