Assam: AIUDF Distances Itself as MLA’s Terror Remark Sparks Arrest

Guwahati: A significant rift has emerged within the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) following the arrest of party MLA Aminul Islam. His controversial remarks regarding the recent terror attack in Pahalgam have drawn widespread condemnation, prompting swift action from law enforcement. The Nagaon police in Assam apprehended the legislator after a video surfaced online, wherein he appeared to defend the actions of the terrorists involved in the incident.

The arrest was confirmed by Nagaon Superintendent of Police, Swapnaneel Deka, who detailed the nature of the allegations. Deka stated that the circulating video contained “very wrong statements” from MLA Aminul Islam, which were interpreted as a defense of the terrorists. Consequently, a case was registered, leading to his arrest. The MLA now faces charges under sections 152/196/197(1)/113(3)/352/353 of the Bharatiya Nyay Samhita (BNS), as confirmed by the Assam Police via an official post on X.

Assam Director General of Police, Harmeet Singh, further corroborated the arrest, indicating that Aminul Islam was taken to the Nagaon police station. The swiftness of the police action underscored the severity of the allegations and the potential for public unrest stemming from the MLA’s remarks.

In an effort to mitigate the damage, AIUDF General Secretary, Rafiqul Islam, publicly condemned his party colleague’s statements. He clarified that Aminul Islam’s opinions were “personal” and did not reflect the party’s stance. Rafiqul Islam emphasized the need for unity and support for the Indian government and security forces during this sensitive time. He asserted that such statements should have been avoided, particularly in the immediate aftermath of the terror attack.

Rafiqul Islam reiterated the AIUDF’s commitment to standing with the Indian government in the fight against terrorism. He pledged the party’s full support for any measures taken to eliminate terrorists and terrorism from the country. This statement was intended to distance the AIUDF from the controversial remarks and reaffirm its dedication to national security.
