Assam: AJYCP Protests Against Withdrawal of Foreigners Tribunal Cases in Nagaon
NAGAON: The All Assam Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) today staged a fierce protest here, bringing traffic to a standstill as they voiced their strong opposition to the state government’s recent move to withdraw cases from the Foreigners Tribunal. The controversial decision, which impacts six individuals from different religious backgrounds, has ignited a fresh wave of discontent among Assamese nationalist organisations.
The demonstration turned tense in the Jur area when police attempted to block the AJYCP’s march. A scuffle ensued, with determined protestors pushing through and dismantling police barricades, before occupying the main road. The action severely disrupted normal traffic flow for a considerable duration, causing inconvenience for commuters and highlighting the protestors’ resolve.
AJYCP leaders lambasted the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led government, accusing it of a “pro-Bangladeshi character” and warning that such policies would compromise Assam’s demographic security. They articulated the fear that the state was on a path to becoming a “dumping ground for foreigners,” a sentiment that resonates deeply with the indigenous population. The protestors also alleged that the withdrawal of these cases was a politically motivated strategy ahead of the upcoming elections. Police presence remained high at the protest site to ensure the situation did not escalate further.
