Assam: Akhil Gogoi suspended from Assembly for disturbing Governor’s speech

Guwahati: Raijor Dal Chief and Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi on Monday was suspended from Assam Assembly for allegedly disrupting the proceedings and interrupting the Governor’s speech on the first day of the 2022-23 Assam budget session.

Gogoi was taken from the House by Speaker Biswajit Daimary as he continued to protest with a placard in his hand throughout the Governor’s speech.

The Speaker requested that he not interrupt the Governor’s speech and instead discuss the issue when it was finished, but Gogoi refused.

Throughout the Governor’s speech, the member from Sivasagar kept questioning when the promised 1 lakh employment in Assam will be generated.

While addressing the media outside the Assembly Gogoi said that the Governor’s address was “disappointing” because it lacked “defined plans and programmes.”

“Apart from the government’s usual working, there is no announcement on matters affecting the people of Assam,” he added.

Assam Finance Minister Ajanta Neog will propose the state budget for 2022-23 on March 16.

During the budget session, six legislations are expected to be introduced.

There will be 11 working days in this period. During this time, the assembly’s department-related standing committees will have their meetings.

The Assam Assembly’s budget session began today and will last till April 1.

This will be the BJP government of Himanta Biswa Sarma’s second budget session. The session was held in July of the previous year.
