Assam Among Top Five Fastest-Growing States in India: CM Himanta Biswa Sarma

Guwahati, 26th July: Assam has been recognized as one of the top five fastest-growing states in India, according to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. He attributed the state’s significant progress to a series of developmental initiatives and policies implemented by the government.

Speaking to the media, CM Sarma highlighted key economic indicators from the recent economic survey. “In 2021, the state bank deposits stood at Rs 1.71 lakh crore, while in 2023-24, they surged to Rs 2.24 lakh crore. This 30 percent increase in deposits within three years is a substantial economic indicator,” he stated.

Discussing the credit sector, Sarma noted, “In 2021, banks issued loans amounting to Rs 80,871 crore, which increased to Rs 1.27 lakh crore in 2024. This growth is reflective of our robust economic policies.” He further highlighted the improvement in the state’s Credit/Deposit (C/D) ratio, which rose from a traditional 32 percent to 58 percent according to the economic survey.

The Chief Minister also pointed out a significant decrease in the unemployment rate, stating, “In 2022-23, the unemployment rate was at 8 percent, but it has now dropped to 6.1 percent.”

Additionally, Sarma shared details of his recent discussions with Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw regarding enhancing railway connectivity in Assam. The talks explored the potential for establishing rail manufacturing entities in the state and starting direct train connectivity between Kamakhya and Ayodhya to benefit devotees.

The possibility of launching train services between Assam’s Barak Valley and West Bengal via Bangladesh was also discussed. The Railway Ministry assured that this proposal would be prioritized. Sarma lauded the Union Minister’s efforts to increase the budget allocation for rail connectivity in Assam in the Union Budget 2024.

These developments underscore Assam’s dynamic growth trajectory and the government’s commitment to continued economic and infrastructural development.
