Guwahati: In a bid to strengthen cross-border ties and promote peaceful coexistence, students from Assam and Nagaland participated in a three-day exchange programme titled “Discovering Neighbours.”
The initiative, aimed at fostering unity and cultural understanding, concluded on February 1 at Government High School, Tzurangkong, Nagaland.
Organized by the Border Peace Coordination Committee (Assam-Nagaland) in collaboration with the Friendship Forum and district administrations of Jorhat and Mokokchung, the programme brought together 30 students from two schools in Assam and 30 students from Government High School, Tzurangkong.
Parents, guardians, and teachers also took part, with Assam students being hosted by families in Chungtiayimsen, Watiyim, and local school teachers.
Over the three days, students engaged in various activities, including sports, cultural exchanges, talent shows, and picnics, fostering deep connections and friendships.
The programme sought to heal historical tensions along the Assam-Nagaland border by emphasizing shared heritage and instilling a sense of unity among young minds.
Speaking at the closing ceremony, Mokokchung Deputy Commissioner Thsuvisie Phoji lauded the initiative as a crucial step toward long-term peace and friendship between the two states. Encouraging students to embrace the experience, he said, “We are not enemies but brothers and sisters.”
Phoji further stressed the need to counter divisive elements that disrupt border harmony and called for such programmes to extend beyond border regions to eliminate hatred and misunderstandings. He urged the students to serve as ambassadors of peace and cooperation in their communities.
The success of the “Discovering Neighbours” programme highlights the power of youth-led initiatives in building a more united and harmonious future for Assam and Nagaland.
