Assam: Another adult Golden langur died due to electrocution in Kokrajhar

Guwahati, 17th May: On May 3rd, as the world observed Endangered Species Day, a tragic incident unfolded in Kokrajhar’s Nayekgaon area, where an endangered Golden Langur, fondly named Sugriva, met a fatal end due to electrocution near State Highway 14.

The heart-wrenching scene witnessed by onlookers was deeply emotional, as other members of Sugriva’s troop looked on from the safety of a nearby tree, numb with shock. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the threats faced by endangered species and the urgent need for enhanced conservation efforts.

Dr. Jihosuo Biswas, a Senior Scientist at the Primate Research Centre NE India/Conservation Himalayas, has been tirelessly working in the Nayekgaon area for the past two years to prevent such tragic incidents. His efforts include the installation of artificial canopy bridges to provide safe passage for endangered Golden Langurs.

Dr. Biswas stressed the importance of concealing electricity cables to prevent future incidents, particularly in regions inhabited by endangered species like the Golden Langur. Implementing this measure, alongside the installation of artificial canopy bridges, could significantly mitigate the risk of electrocution for these precious creatures and other wildlife.

“We live in a world full of many animals, insects, plants, and creatures that are approaching the risk of extinction or are so close to extinction that their species need help immediately to restore the magnificent biodiversity that exists on our earth,” remarked Dr. Biswas, highlighting the urgent need for collective action to protect and preserve our planet’s precious biodiversity.
