Guwahati, 11th December: In a resolute move against corruption, the anti-corruption department conducted raids at the Bongaigaon Revenue Circle office, resulting in the arrest of government official Sudhir Pal on charges of bribery. Pal, employed as a Lat Mandal in Bongaigaon Revenue Circle, was apprehended red-handed while accepting a bribe. He has been taken into custody, and further questioning is underway.
This incident comes against the backdrop of a notable surge in corruption cases in Assam in 2022, as revealed by National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data released on Monday. The state witnessed 57 cases under the Prevention of Corruption Act and related sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) this year, a stark increase compared to 16 cases in both 2020 and 2021. However, it is noteworthy that nearly 95 percent of the 57 cases remained pending before the courts at the end of last year.
