Assam-Arunachal Border Simmers After Alleged Fatal Shooting

Guwahati: Protests flared dramatically today at the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border, specifically near Shantipur Gate, after news broke of the alleged fatal shooting of Shankar Pegu, an Assamese man, in Roing, Lower Dibang Valley district of Arunachal Pradesh. The tragic incident has ignited widespread outrage and brought cross-border movement to a grinding halt.

Agitators, expressing their fury and sorrow, initiated a complete road blockade at the Assam-Arunachal boundary from the early hours, effectively severing connectivity between Roing and Shantipur. The standstill has caused significant disruption, with vehicles unable to traverse the key route.

The demonstration saw a powerful convergence of various organisations, with the All Tai Ahom Students’ Union (TMPK) at the forefront, joined by numerous local groups hailing from Shantipur and Sadiya. Notably, several Arunachal-based organisations have also lent their support to the protest, underscoring the gravity of the situation and the shared demand for accountability.

The unified voice of the demonstrators resonated with a clear call for justice for Shankar Pegu and an exhaustive, transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death. The air in the region remains thick with tension, and authorities are maintaining a vigilant watch, closely monitoring developments to prevent any further escalation.
