Assam Assembly Adjourned Amid Chaos Over Alleged Attack on Deputy Speaker

Guwahati: The Assam Assembly witnessed an uproarious situation on Monday, March 24, after the ruling party alleged that Deputy Speaker Numal Momin was attacked by Congress MLA Nurul Huda just outside the House. This led to the adjournment of the Assembly.

The chaos unfolded as Congress legislators attended the Assembly wearing black dresses to protest against ruling BJP MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi. Kurmi had allegedly verbally abused opposition MLAs and attempted to physically attack them inside the House the previous week. The Congress legislators held a sit-in protest outside the Speaker’s chamber, demanding action against Kurmi.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma claimed that Momin was hospitalised after being attacked by Huda. However, moments before Sarma’s statement, Momin was seen attending the session inside the House. Speaker Biswajit Daimary has asked officials to investigate the matter.

The opposition, comprising Congress, AIUDF, and CPI(M), protested against Kurmi and the ruling party’s statement regarding the alleged attack on Momin. The treasury benches, led by Sarma, countered with shouting, claiming that Momin, a tribal, was attacked by the opposition. The Speaker eventually adjourned the House for 10 minutes due to the unrest.
