Assam Assembly Holds Historic Budget Session in Kokrajhar for the First Time

Kokrajhar – Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma arrived in Kokrajhar on Monday morning to attend the first-ever Assembly session held outside Guwahati, marking a significant moment in the state’s political history.

The Budget session of the Assam Legislative Assembly commenced at the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) Assembly in Kokrajhar, a move seen as a symbolic gesture of peace and integration in the Bodoland region.

Ministers and MLAs traveled to Kokrajhar for this landmark session, reinforcing the state’s commitment to inclusive development. Assam Minister Pijush Hazarika highlighted the importance of the event, stating,
“Fifteen years ago, the people of Kokrajhar wanted a separate state, but today they are welcoming us. This reflects the transformation under CM Sarma’s leadership.”

Deputy Speaker Numal Momin emphasized the session’s positive impact on the region, stating,
“The message from all MLAs is that peace prevails in Bodoland after the BJP government took charge. This session will showcase Assam’s commitment to ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Prayas’.”

  • AIUDF MLA Karim Uddin Barbhuiya praised the initiative, calling it a first-of-its-kind move in India that underscores the government’s commitment to Bodo development.
  • Congress MLA Abdur Rashid Mandal recognized the historic nature of the session, stating that it will boost the confidence of Sixth Schedule communities.
  • AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam remarked that the session is proof of peaceful restoration in BTC areas, moving them closer to mainstream governance.

The Kokrajhar session represents a major shift in Assam’s political landscape, bringing governance closer to previously conflict-ridden areas. The event is being seen as an attempt to foster unity, economic growth, and integration of BTC into Assam’s larger development framework.
