Assam: Baghbar MLA Sherman Ali Detained In Barpeta

Guwahati: Police detained Baghbar MLA Sherman Ali early on December 26 after he interfered with an eviction proceeding at Kanara Satra’s encroached land, the seat with number 12 in Barpeta.

Baghbar MLA Sherman Ali reached to the spot where the state government was engaged in eviction.

Ali, who was protesting the eviction and flaunting play cards, claimed that many landless people had been removed from the region by the state government without a rehabilitation plan or prior study.

Police had to use force to remove Ali from the location after he resisted numerous orders from the authorities to leave the area. The officers then detained Ali at the Barpeta police station.

“It is the responsibility of every government and authority to safeguard the rights of people. Before eviction, it is still unknown why the government didn’t conduct a proper survey? Why the people were not rehabilitated beforehand?” Ali said.

“The spot where you are sitting upon was encroached by one Esa Hawk and Sona Mia. They have encroached around 80 bighas of land,” The circle officer present at the spot said.

The circle officer added that it had been discovered via examination that persons professing to be landless actually had land pattas in their names.

“Those were given notices to vacate and did willingly,” he said.

“As far as I know 25 households are landless are evicted from here,” Ali said.

The state government has not yet rehabilitated the 8 landless households that were evicted from Mandiya satra a year ago, according to Ali, who reiterated that he would not leave the area until he received a proper written statement from the authorities guaranteeing that those who were evicted would receive rehabilitation within a month.

“Hitler once resorted to killing people and he met the same fate, shot himself! The governments acting against humanity will pay dividends. God is noticing everything,” Sherman Ali said.
