Assam: Barak Civil Body Condemns NIT Silchar Incident

Guwahati, 18th February: The Barak Civil Body has strongly condemned the recent incident at NIT Silchar, where a group of inebriated students allegedly attacked mess workers at Boys Hostel No. 7 on February 16. Shankar Dey, secretary-in-chief of the Barak Civil Society, questioned the role of the authorities in previous incidents where students engaged in fights, only to be acquitted later. Dey demanded the intervention of central and state governments and called for action against the accused students.

The incident, which occurred around 10:30 PM, sent shockwaves across the campus. Witnesses described a distressing scene where intoxicated students verbally and physically abused mess workers who were simply performing their duties. In response, the mess workers have decided to file an official FIR against the involved students. Sources indicate that significant damage was caused to the hostel’s mess area during the incident.

While the reasons behind the attack remain unclear, initial reports suggest personal conflicts or impulsiveness fueled by alcohol and drug consumption. The incident has sparked discussions among the student body, with many condemning the actions of their peers and advocating for unity and respect within the campus community.
