Assam: Basistha Police Station and Child Protection Unit Rescue 13 Child Laborers in Guwahati
Guwahati, 22nd April: In a joint operation aimed at combatting child labor, the Basistha Police Station, in collaboration with the Child Protection Unit, conducted raids in various areas of Guwahati, including Bhetapara and Beltola. The operation targeted establishments suspected of employing underage workers, resulting in the rescue of 13 child laborers from garages, shops, and washing centers.
Ankit Saikia, a member of the district-level task force, revealed that the operation was initiated based on received information about child labor in specific areas under the Basistha Police Station. With the support of the police and NGOs like Child Friendly Guwahati, the operation successfully rescued approximately 11 children engaged in laborious activities. The focus was on rescuing children from establishments rather than homes.
Following the rescue, authorities plan to question the rescued children to gather more information about their circumstances. Cases have been registered against the firms found employing underage workers, indicating a firm stance against exploiting vulnerable children for labor.
This concerted effort against child labor demonstrates the ongoing commitment to safeguarding the rights and well-being of children in Guwahati.
