Assam: Batadrava PS In-Charge Suspended, Cop Transferred

Guwahati: The station in -charge of Batadrava police station in Nagaon district of Assam was suspended with immediate effect following the Saturday incident.

The station in-charge of the Batadrava police station identified as Kumud Gogoi was arrested after the police station was set on fire by residents upset over the death of a person in custody.

The deputy inspector general (DIG) of central Assam police Satyaraj Hazarika issued the order.

In addition, all police officers at the police station have been transferred as a disciplinary step.

It should be mentioned that the situation in Batadrava became tense on Saturday after one person died in police custody.

The deceased identified as Safiqul Islam who was a resident of Salonabari in Dhing.

Locals have alleged that Safiqul was beaten to death in police custody after refusing to pay a bribe demanded by police station authorities.

The officials reportedly sought Rs 10,000, a duck, and a chicken from Safiqul’s family for his release.

Saifqul was arrested by the police when he was on his way to sell fish on Friday evening.

Later, an enraged mob set fire to the police station and assaulted two officers on duty.
