Assam: Batiapara Villagers Prepare Traditional Bhelaghor for Bihu Festivities

Assam: As Assam readies itself for the vibrant Bihu festival, the residents of Batiapara village in Bongaigaon district are working tirelessly to uphold the festival’s traditions.

The centerpiece of their celebrations, the traditional bhelaghor (temporary hut), is nearing completion just in time for the festive Uruka night. This evening, which precedes the main day of Bihu, is marked by a grand community feast, symbolizing unity and gratitude for the harvest.

For the people of Batiapara, Bihu is more than a festival; it is a heartfelt tribute to Assamese agrarian culture and a reaffirmation of their community bonds. Villagers of all ages have come together to construct the bhelaghor, a task that embodies teamwork and cultural pride.

On Uruka, families will gather in the bhelaghor to share a festive meal featuring traditional Assamese delicacies like pithas (rice cakes) and other dishes prepared with local ingredients. “The bhelaghor construction is almost complete, and we are excited to come together to celebrate,” shared a village elder. “It is a tradition that ties us to our roots, and we are committed to ensuring that every detail is perfect for the festival.”

The process of building the bhelaghor not only reflects the villagers’ commitment to their heritage but also showcases the spirit of cooperation and harmony. The structure itself is a symbol of Assamese rural life, built with natural materials like bamboo and straw, reflecting sustainable practices passed down through generations.

As the festive night approaches, the villagers of Batiapara are filled with anticipation, ready to revel in the joy of Bihu. Their dedication to preserving this tradition ensures that the essence of the festival—gratitude, unity, and cultural pride—remains alive and thriving for future generations.
