Assam: Bhotiyapara Residents Rage as Gas Leak Woes Continue
Local organisations Asomiya Yuba Manch and Sangrami Sena, bolstered by the Bir Lachit Sena, staged a powerful joint protest yesterday, June 17, against the unceasing gas leak from ONGC’s Rig No. 147(a) in Bhotiyapara Badi Chowk. The air was thick with frustration as demonstrators voiced their outrage over what they condemned as flagrant disregard by ONGC and SK Petro, whose alleged oversight is believed to be behind the perilous leak.
Residents and activists converged at the protest site, their voices united in chants demanding immediate action and accountability. They lambasted the authorities, accusing them of a severe dereliction of duty towards the distressed local populace, highlighting a perceived sluggish and irresponsible response to the unfolding crisis.
Among the crucial demands articulated during the demonstration were swift and fair compensation for all affected individuals, alongside the urgent provision of superior food and shelter for those currently displaced and housed in temporary relief camps due to the ongoing emergency.
Protestors also pointed fingers at the conspicuous lack of transparency and called for a thorough, impartial inquiry into the incident, underscoring the imperative of placing public safety and environmental stewardship above all else.
With the gas leak persisting and local ire mounting, the groups have not ruled out a further intensification of their protests if their pressing demands are not met in the days to come.
