Guwahati: A dark shadow fell over the festive spirit of Bihu in Guwahati’s Odalbakra area late Thursday night as a disagreement over a donation tragically escalated into a violent assault, leaving a young man with serious injuries.
The incident unfolded when members of a Bihu celebration committee from Beltoli Pahar approached Govinda Hazarika, a resident of the locality, seeking a contribution of ₹1,000 towards their festivities. A point of contention arose when Hazarika offered a sum of ₹500, a gesture that reportedly ignited a fiery verbal exchange with Padmakanta Das, another local resident known in the community as “Mathuwa.”
According to eyewitness accounts, the already tense atmosphere worsened when Das’s son allegedly acted aggressively towards Hazarika concerning the reduced donation. The verbal sparring swiftly devolved into a physical confrontation, culminating in a shocking act of violence. Padmakanta Das allegedly attacked Hazarika with a blade, inflicting serious injuries to his neck. Amidst the ensuing turmoil, Hazarika’s mother was also reportedly subjected to assault.
Swift action was taken to provide medical assistance to the injured youth, as Hazarika was immediately transported to a nearby private hospital for urgent treatment. In the aftermath of the distressing event, Hazarika’s family has taken the crucial step of filing a formal complaint with the Adagudam police outpost, seeking justice for the alleged assault.
Responding promptly to the reported crime, law enforcement authorities have initiated a thorough investigation into the incident. Adding a concerning dimension to the case, reliable sources have confirmed that the accused, Padmakanta Das, is currently serving as a personnel within the Assam Police force. The involvement of a member of law enforcement in such a violent episode has raised serious questions and amplified the gravity of the situation as the investigation progresses.
