Assam: Bishnupriya Manipuri Community Showcases Raas Dance at Maha Kumbh Mela

Guwahati: The Bishnupriya Manipuri community brought a vibrant display of Assam’s cultural heritage to the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, mesmerizing audiences with their traditional Raas dance.

The performance, organized by the Assam Government’s Cultural Affairs Department, marked a moment of immense pride for both the community and the state.

Initially performed on February 1, the dance garnered such overwhelming appreciation that saints and sages at the event requested a second performance. Responding to the high demand, the artists took the stage again on February 3 at Sector 7 of the Maha Kumbh venue, further cementing their cultural significance at the grand religious gathering.

Assam Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah attended the event as the state’s representative, reinforcing Assam’s strong cultural presence at one of the largest spiritual congregations in the world. His participation underscored the government’s commitment to promoting the rich traditions of Assam on a national stage.

Community leaders expressed heartfelt gratitude to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for facilitating their participation in such a prestigious event. They described the opportunity as a matter of great honor, allowing the Bishnupriya Manipuri community to share their heritage, devotion, and artistry with a larger audience.

The Raas dance, deeply rooted in the Vaishnavite traditions of Assam and Manipur, is a spiritual and cultural expression of devotion to Lord Krishna. Its inclusion at the Maha Kumbh Mela highlighted the enduring legacy of Assamese traditions and strengthened the community’s cultural footprint on the national stage.
