Assam BJP Chief: Opposition Legislators Happy, May Join Party Soon
Guwahati: Bhabesh Kalita , the president of Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) state unit in Assam, said that the opposition legislators in the state assembly were “happy and satisfied” with the developmental works being take up by the government.
The head of the BJP claimed that the opposition lawmakers were content with the performance of the current administration, which is headed by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. “Some of them may join the party in the days to come,” he added.
Kalita was quoted by national media saying, “Opposition legislators are happy and satisfied with the developmental activities that are being taken up in the state under the leadership of chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.”
However, when questioned about whether those lawmakers were from the Congress and how many were in touch with the BJP, he withheld any further information. He said, “Only time will tell”.
When questioned about the chances of the ruling party winning the Lok Sabha elections in 2024, Kalita added that he was optimistic about the party’s victory by a substantial majority.
After the Assam assembly elections in 2021, a few opposition MLAs switched parties and later won their respective seats in by-elections.
Moreover, it was claimed that a large number of opposition MLAs cast multiple ballots in the just-concluded Presidential elections. Additionally, two Rajya Sabha seats from the state were filled during the elections.
