Assam: BJP MLA Defends Congratulatory Message to Congress Leader Amid Criticism
Guwahati, 5th June: BJP MLA Mrinal Saikia has defended his decision to congratulate Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi, emphasizing the importance of respecting individuals irrespective of political affiliations. This statement came after Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma criticized Saikia for his gesture.
Saikia took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his stance, saying, “I joined the BJP inspired by leaders who promoted respect for individuals regardless of their political stance.” He voiced disappointment that congratulating someone from the opposition is seen as a transgression in the current political climate.
The controversy arose over Saikia’s congratulatory message to Gogoi for winning the Jorhat Lok Sabha seat. Saikia’s act of bipartisanship was intended to acknowledge Gogoi’s victory and challenge traditional election dynamics. However, it sparked a reaction from Chief Minister Sarma, who suggested that Saikia might not remain with the BJP for long. “Instead of congratulating PM Modi, he is wishing Gaurav Gogoi,” Sarma remarked, implying a potential shift in party loyalty. He added, “Just as many Congress leaders joined the BJP in Assam, some of our leaders might also join them.”
Despite the criticism, Saikia reiterated his commitment to respecting others and fostering cordial relations across party lines. The incident underscores internal tensions within the BJP as it navigates unexpected electoral outcomes and debates over ideological principles.
